Muncie Mission Donation

by Eric Cellier May 14, 2017

Hello, all!

We are back with another monthly update on what has been happening with Sky Footwear! This past Thursday, May 11, Keaton and I had the opportunity to visit the Muncie Rescue Mission in Muncie, Indiana. We were especially excited to partner with the Muncie Mission, as it is so close to our college home of Taylor University. This community will always be dear to us, as Sky Footwear was created in Upland, Indiana.

While in Muncie, Keaton and I had the opportunity to share the mission of Sky Footwear with a group of people living at the Muncie Rescue Mission. We reminded them of the hundreds of people who have bought socks from our store with the intent of providing socks for others in the process. The residents were extremely thankful and we had an awesome time serving, eating, and hanging out with the residents.

I am always amazed at the stories we hear during our visits to rescue missions. Frank Baldwin, the executive director of the Muncie Mission, shared one that stood out to me. Frank told us about a homeless man that was sleeping in a dumpster to protect himself from the rain in Indianapolis. Due to the dumpster filling up with water, this man was unable to fall asleep. As he was exiting the dumpster late at night a policeman saw him and approached the individual. The officer told the guy that he was going to take him to the local Indy shelter but the homeless requested that he wanted to go to the Muncie Mission. The cop proceeded to pay for a taxi cab to send him to the Muncie, so he would have a place to sleep.

This story connected with me on several levels. The willingness of the policeman to act on what he saw and not just observe is inspiring. Additionally, it is hard to ignore that this man was sleeping in a garbage dumpster to protect himself from the rain. This is happening around our country every night. What am I doing to help? What more can I do? How am I being called to serve others daily?

I pray to continually seek the answers to those questions and learn from people that are already exemplifying what it means to serve and think of others before themselves. I am so thankful for the rescue missions that serve the homeless all year round. In particular, the compassion from the Muncie Mission staff for their residents was so evident in the short time we could spend with them. With each monthly visit, I am continually amazed at the work they do to strengthen these individuals spiritually, mentally, and physically for the next stage of their lives. It has taught me what compassion truly means and what it looks like to surrender your time, money, and energy into loving others. It is my hope that you all understand the role that you have played in our mission as we continue to partner with homeless shelters across the country. We are so thankful for your continued support of Sky Footwear and we are excited to continue our mission of spreading hope and socks through our donations.

God Bless,

Eric
